In response to the #1 Complaint of email users today, namely SPAM,
we have compiled a list of tips.
Click here to view the SolidSpace SPAM Policy
- Guard your email address: Don't give out
your email address to anyone but those to which you expect to correspond with.
For dealing with web site forms and everyone else, see our next tip sets.
- Use free web based email accounts: For online
purchases and other legit users you don't regularly communicate with, use webmail.
Many services like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail offer such services. Most of these
services have spam control options avaliable.
- Use a throw away email address: Use disposable
email addresses (most ISP's will let you have more than one account). You can
use this for participation in online forums or chat groups.
- Use fake addresses: Most web based forms
require you to submit an email address, if you do not expect to be sent a download
link or confirmation, use this method.
- Do not post your address: Do not post your
email address on guest books, chat services, lists, newsgroups, and so
on and so forth. If you must use your real address, munge it so that humans
can read it but bots cannot. Example sean@dontusethispart.msn.com.
- Opt-out: When you do buy something online,
look carefully for the check boxes that say you opt to recieve updates.
Make sure that you opt out of any mails that you do not want to get.
- Read the privacy policy: Make sure you
understand what a web site will collect about you and what promises they make about
your online identity. If there is no policy, see tips 2 and 4.
- Use a spam filter: Even if you follow
these tips, you may still get spam. If you get more than you can handle, you
can contact your local ISP to see what options they have at the server level.
Another choice is to get a personal spam blacklist utility. This can be retrieved
by going to SpamPal.
